Tremor hits Southern Cape

Cape Town – A light tremor has struck the Southern Cape.

Ivo Vegter, who is currently in Knysna, confirmed to News24 that a "light, but quite noticeable" tremor took place at approximately 16:15 on Saturday afternoon.

News24 and Twitter users took to the internet on Saturday afternoon to report the news.

Twitter user @HansErikIken tweeted at 16:13: “Did I just feel an earthquake here in the Garden Route? Any news on that?”

At 16:18, Twitter user @stuartlidstone also tweeted: “Sedgefield just had a minor earthquake!” and then moments later “Cousin on a farm 25 kms outa [sic] town felt it too!”

Twitter user @Cariendebeer told News24: "We are one a farm just outside of George and felt it. Was quick but def shaking!!!"

News24 also received reports from users via e-mail of the incident.

According to the
SA Weather and Disaster Information Service website, who have confirmed that a tremor took place, a number of residents reported it to them via SMS from various regions of the Southern Cape.

There are no reports yet of any injury or damages.
