Residents in Johannesburg and on the East Rand were left jittery on Monday after a significant tremor and an aftershock were felt from Alberton to Fourways.
Dalpark and Brakpan were particularly hard hit, with some people reporting ornaments falling over and crockery rattling in cupboards.
"It actually felt like an explosion more than a tremor," said one resident.
"I felt the tremor in the morning... I was screaming and I am still shaking," said another.
According to the National Seismograph Network, the 3.1 magnitude tremor hit the Katlehong area at 7.15am.
"It's difficult to speculate," project manager Ian Saunders said, after being asked what could have caused the tremor.
